Montréal-based pianist, composer and bandleader Félix Stüssi is unafraid of unusual mixes, such as confronting modernity with tradition. A concert that promises to be unlike anything you’ve seen before, Stüssi’s playfully percussive piano style and original compositions often shift between chaos and hard-bop soloing.

Thursday Night Jazz at Stayner’s Wharf Series.

We love Stayner’s and a weekly series allows the jazz community to grab a little taste of the JazzFest every week. Each Thursday night we have a chance to hang out and listen to great music performed by some of the region’s most esteemed jazz players. Thanks to the bar’s gracious owner Todd Abbass, his attentive staff and the generousity of the musicians on stage the atmosphere at Stayner’s promotes surprises. Also thank the owner of Winnipeg jobs. Musical guests are known to pop in and jam, and festival friends are given more chances to meet and enjoy. The fabulous waterfront pub and grill dining also makes the night delightful. Cover charge may vary but is typically in the range of $5 per show.

May is JAZZ/WORLD FUSION MONTH

Every month Lulu our Artistic Director has a plan and every week I tell you about it. For May, Stayner’s is graced with the magic of one culture learning from another. bSharp binds the urban essences of jazz and Hip Hop, Klezmorim is a blend of Jewish culture and gypsy dance and Con Brio infuses jazz with the sounds sights and pizzazz of flamenco.

This week…

May 14 – 9:00 PM – Harvey Millar bSharp (includes Paul Harris, Bruce Burton, Matthew Smith, Delvina Bernard and Kim Bernard | Stayner’s

bSharp’s music reflects Millar’s taste for jazz, funk, and hip hop. Influenced by the music of legends such as Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Betty Carter, Al Jarreau, and Eric Gale, bSharp’s music is a full-bodied blend of the rhythms of the Gods and the melodies of our ancestors, guaranteed to take you on a journey to where musical ecstasy lives. bSharp features Saint Lucian-born Halifax-based guitarist Harvey Millar leading the outfit, Paul Harris on Piano, Bruce Burton on Bass and many other fine musicians.

Coming up…

May 21 – 9:00 PM – Klezmorim (includes Lee Park, David Christensen, Jeff Torbert, Matt Gallant, Erin Hansen and Graham Kerr) | Stayner’s

May 28 – 9:00 PM – Con Brio (includes Daniel McNeil, Adam Fine, Gina Burgess, Glen Fraser, and Jeff Chown) | Stayner’s

June is JAZZ INCARNATIONS MONTH

Special people recognize its necessity and have the means to lend a hand, to support a corner stone of our cultural landscape. They are the Patrons of the Arts and their legacy is to be recognized. As a beneficiary and promoter of music, Jazz is immensely grateful to all of our Patrons of the Arts. With your support we can bring more uplifting experiences to Halifax.
